It’s been reported from various outlets that early footage for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi played extremely well at CinemaCon earlier this year, and given the dazzling imagery on display in this Apple trailer, you can easily imagine it being the kind of thing that would light up the screen in a first-glimpse kind of environment. I’m not sure, however, that this trailer represents a no-question Academy hit of any sort — while Yann Martel’s prizewinning novel, which I read a couple of years back, is full of universal heart, the tone of this preview is so strangely magical and unique that I’m hesitant to envision a consensus title emerging. That’s to say nothing of my personal expectations here, however, which, given Lee’s pedigree, are of course high. Life of Pi will be released, via 20th Century Fox, on November 21.
