For obvious reasons, Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables has all of the makings of a bankable sight-unseen Oscar player. The adapted screenplay comes from William Nicholson (Gladiator), who has displayed a period-piece tendency throughout his career. The film also reunites Hooper with Danny Cohen, who provided the Oscar-nominated cinematography for the Oscar-winning The King’s Speech. The cast, additionally, is oozing with well-known, multi-dimensional names — Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Russell Crowe chief among them. Sacha Baron Cohen’s in the mix, too, prompting one to wonder if he’s going to start making a habit out of appearing in one prestige pic each year. Universal is handling the distribution, and they’ve flagged a December 14 release date, which will give the film some time to breath before the Christmas rush of Django Unchained and The Great Gatsby. An embedded version of the trailer, which just hit at Apple, can be found after the cut.
