As if we should’ve expected anything different, Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, based on this Apple trailer, looks positively wild. A lot of people — and rightfully so, in some ways — will be instantly turned off by the director’s brash stylization, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have some respect for the go-for-broke aesthetic, if only because it takes some moxie to transform a piece of canonically esteemed literature this aggressively. Warner Bros. will release the film on December 25, which should make for an interesting head-to-head battle with Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained (which, according to various reports, received uproarious applause at Cannes during The Weinstein Company’s unveiling of preview footage for the film).
