‘Tyrannosaur’ Reigns Supreme at British Independent Film Awards

Paddy Considine’s Tyrannosaur cleaned up nicely at this year’s 14th annual British Independent Film Awards. In addition to being named Best British Independent Film, Considine’s debut was awarded in the fields of Best Actress (Olivia Colman) and Best Debut Director. Considine was also nominated in the Best Director field, alongside such heavyweights as Steve McQueen, Lynne Ramsay (who won the category), and Tomas Alfredson.

McQueen’s film, the NC-17 rated sex-addiction drama Shame, earned Best Actor honors for Michael Fassbender. The supporting categories were won by Vanessa Redgrave (Coriolanus) and Michael Smiley (Kill List), the latter of whom, in particular, reigned supreme in a truly stacked lineup.

Apart from the Best Newcomer citation for Tom Cullen, who gives a wonderful co-leading turn in Andrew Haigh’s lovingly conceived Weekend, the biggest delights for me were found in the BIFA’s Best Technical Achievement realm. The stellar craft contributions put forth by British cinema this year become ever-so-obvious when an achievement as aesthetically and thematically engrossing as Hoyte van Hoytema’s lensing of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is left off the list of nominees. That sour note aside, Shame was justly cited twice in the field, for its equally subversive cinematography (Sean Bobbitt) and editing (Joe Walker). Maria Djurkovic’s win, meanwhile, for her production design on Tinker, Tailor, is, in hindsight, kind of a no-brainer — her intoxicating, stylish accomplishments within the film are as responsible for its atmospheric success as any other element of the picture.
