Oscar Predictions: One More Stab Before Critics Have Their Say

Posted on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at 4:04 am by Danny King in the Awards category

The New York Film Critics Circle will announce their 2011 award-winners later today via Twitter (@NYFCC2011), and, with that, a new dynamic will be brought to this year’s Oscar race — the crucial perspectives of the critics groups. While no doubt having an impact on the shaping of the season, however, the impact of these circles should not be blown out of proportion. The universal critical hailing of David Fincher’s The Social Network, for instance, went a long way towards securing the film’s status as a prime Oscar contender, but, at the end of the day, Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech went home with the major prizes.

The National Board of Review will follow the New Yorkers and announce their winners on Thursday, December 1. And after that, the rest of the major groups will tune in with their input. So I thought it would be useful to chime in with one last stab at things before these organizations have their say. Nothing against the critical input — though the NYFCC’s me-first mentality is growing increasingly grating — but this fresh perspective could (or just as easily could not) wind up being more closely aligned with the Academy’s ultimate sensibilities.

My updated predictions can be found below. Major movements include the bumping up of Martin Scorsese’s Hugo (the reviews are through the roof) in multiple categories, often to the detriment of Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which, for all of its slow-burn intrigue and merit, could prove too quiet and intricate for Academy tastes. We’ll see. To check in with my previous update, click here.

I really hope Le Havre gets a nomination, my home country of Finland has only ever been nominated once whilst other Nordic countries have brought the trophy home many a time. I have a feeling A Separation will bring home the price this year though..

Anna: I like Le Havre, though, at the same time, I think its merits have been blown somewhat out of proportion by the acclaim its received. Nevertheless, it looks to be in a good position to score a nomination. And I’ve yet to see A Separation, but it does seem to be emerging as a frontrunner.
